in 2026 im astonished the FRA doesnt have some simple sensors at major crosses, thinking primarily where 18 wheelers and big truck loads travel, to be able to alert operators of trains that an upcoming crossing is being obstructed. https://railroads.dot.gov/sites/fra.dot.gov/files/2025-01/Rail%20Crossing%20Info%20System%20for%20Emergency%20Responders.pdf is the only thing i could really find, but this is more so about alerting first responders to which train company to contact to prevent trains from continuing towards the area. i just imagine a meshatatic device connected to some sensor, that will give a signal if a crossing is blocked, the train operator has a device that when it gets into distance and range of the mesh node, it can read it. mesh range approx like a mile or two when you have good height etc. probably could be solar powered, i have ideas, but no knowledge of how to make them a reality. not perfect, and our government waste our money anyways why not at least save some peoples lives. 130k public rail crossings in the US. you do the major ones, what they deem active crossings, high traffic volume, larger vehicles (trucks, big rigs) about 28k locomotives active just a reminder that the infrastructure here sucks
