A tale...
The story begins in a time before the city became a city of prominence. In those days, the river was the main artery of the region, and a fierce giant ruled over its waters. The Giant was not a benevolent ruler, demanding an exorbitant toll from all who wished to cross the river. Those who refused or could not pay were met with a gruesome fate: The giant would cut off their hand and hurl it into the river.
During a campaign, a brave and fearless Roman soldier was traveling through the region, and as he approached the river, he was met by the giant and his outrageous demands. Resolute and unyielding, the Roman soldier challenged the oppressive giant to a battle that would ultimately decide the fate of the river’s weary travelers.
The conflict was fierce, but the Roman soldier’s courage and skill won the day. In a final act of poetic justice, the soldier severed the giant's hand and cast it into the river, freeing the waterway from his oppressive grasp. In doing so, he set the stage for the city to blossom into the most vibrant city.
(I just wish today's citizens of the city would still remember the tale...)
