Because healthcare among the Mayan population is minimal, sometimes correctable childhood vision issues are not caught in time. Children can suppress vision in an eye. If this is caught early, it can be improved with patching or glasses. If it is not caught by 10-11, vision loss is permanent. Helping me get back to Guatemala can help some of this be caught in time. The Hope Worldwide Guatemala Brigade serves in a town called Chimaltenango. Its population is about 65% Mayan. Generally, the Mayan community is underserved when it comes to healthcare. They rely on NGOs like Hope Worldwide to provide healthcare services. If you’re so moved please help me get there in February. You can donate via my go fund me or if you prefer to send bitcoin, use my Strike Lightning address. || mdschwarz@strike.me

My trip to Guatemala, also included a two night stay at Lago Bitcoin. I met up with my friend and fellow bitcoin evangelist Eliazar. He showed us around Lago Bitcoin. He has singled handedly orange pilled over 100 businesses around the lake. image

Ten years ago, I left a career in public relations and marketing communications. By accident or providence, I ended up in optometry. From the first day all those years ago, I knew this was my second act. I loved being able to work directly with the people I was helping instead of my impact being more abstract in a corporate setting. This year, I was able to fulfill a dream of going on a mission trip. I chose a community service brigade through Hope Worldwide. These brigades bring needed healthcare to a local communities in Central America. I chose Guatemala, because only one optometrist had visited through the brigade once in 7-8 years. This brigade had 1,000 pairs of donated glasses collecting dust. I knew I had to go. As you can imagine the experience was very impactful for me, and potentially life changing for those whose vision improved with a basic eye exam and a free pair of glasses. I would love to go back for the next brigade in February 2026. I’ve set up a go fund me site if you’d like to help me return. The money will go for my expenses, but more importantly it will give the gift of better sight to an underserved community.

Did you know the Guatemalan government only spends about $97 per person on healthcare? Comparatively, the United States government spends $7,825 per person. This leads to chronic shortages in supplies and trained staff. That's one reason, I want to return to Guatemala in February.
