By loosening the rules, Bitcoin Core hopes to: 1. Make it easier for everyone to use OP_RETURN for legitimate purposes (like DeFi protocols or other apps that need to store data on-chain). 2. Improve fairness in mining, since miners will see these transactions in their mempools (the pool of pending transactions) rather than through backchannels. 3. Speed up block validation and propagation, as nodes will already have these transactions in their mempools, making it easier to verify new blocks. Why is it controversial again?
