Teaching 3 year olds to clean: 1. Maintain a large toy/stuff/book storage room with many shelves and cubbies for organizing an excess of things. 2. Reduce possessions in their room and main areas until airy, light, and everything has a place to be easily and obviously put away. 3. Incorporate cleaning into the family culture everytime you leave a room. Never leave a room in a dirty state. Do it with them. Be the example. 4. When a child refuses to clean, pick those items up and move to storage in a matter of fact way. When a child wants to rotate or obtain new toys, do so only when they are managing their responsibility of cleaning. With blessings come responsibility. 5. Never be angry, just show them this is the way it is. Sympathize if they become upset. Tell them you are rooting for them: they can do it! Sell the value of existing in a clean space.
