The Orthodox and Catholics believe that, though Man is fallen and dead in sin, unable to choose God on his own; God gives His grace to everyone, waking us up just enough to freely say yes or no. Salvation happens through this ongoing cooperation: faith, repentance, sacraments, and good works, turning us toward God. Anyone can resist or walk away anytime, and the saved are those who keep saying yes, with His help, till the end. It may seem like God is elusive and only the best men can pursue Him until the end. The truth is the opposite: we are elusive, we universally flee, and it is God who pursues *us* to wash and redeem us, even sacrificing His son in order to have our sins accounted for and to provide a righteousness in our place.
