What I learned by redoing my file system in the last couple weeks: 1. Go all center tab, plain, noncolored files. The left/center/right paradigm is fragile, doesn't solve the problem, and introduces mental friction. The colored folders do similarly. 2. Always file by purpose, never type. For examples, Taxes - 2018, Residences - TX, Vehicles - Ford Truck, is far better than W2s, Rental Agreements, Titles. 3. Look for a file box with metal rails so that your plain hanging file folders easily glide over the top of them. 4. Organize files into 3 time horizon using left-most file folder tabs: Now, Later, and Archive. Most permanent files end up in archive, Now and Later lets you prioritize things being worked on currently and things coming up soon. 5. Ruthlessly prune older files you don't need anymore. Ask AI if you aren't quite sure. That's it. Less is far more. Fancy organization is a weight, it doesn't free you. You want to make something so simple that future you can figure it out even if you forget all the decisions you made when designing the system.
