2010 Oregon: legalize marijuana! 2020 Oregon: well that didn’t go as planned. Dispensaries become major part of local economy. Fentanyl and drugs crisis abound. Population leaves. City becomes a toxic dump. 2023 Oregon: legalize mushrooms! (Dates are approx., going off memory) Sigh… I used to be in the “legalize it” camp. I consider myself mostly-libertarian. But then I saw drugs destroy #Portland. I recognize the pharmaceutical difference between pot and “hard” drugs, and I support individual choice. But how can one say something is “good” when you’ve witnessed it’s destructive powers on a society. I go down Sandy Blvd and it is nothing but burnt out RVs and decay. The only prosperous businesses are head shops. #drugs #marijuana #weed #psilocybin #mushrooms #health #politics #society image

Interesting note. @Rico in your opinion does this also hamper #Bitcoin adoption in EU? Obviously there are many tech-saavy Europeans who use or hodl Bitcoin, but I’m especially talking about government. They have less incentive to be Bitcoin friendly when their economy won’t benefit financially from mining. In contrast, in the US you have lots of industry lobbying government to be Bitcoin friendly. “If the injustice is part of the necessary friction of the machine of government, let it go, let it go: perchance it will wear smooth,—certainly the machine will wear out. If the injustice has a spring, or a pulley, or a rope, or a crank, exclusively for itself, then perhaps you may consider whether the remedy will not be worse than the evil; but if it is of such a nature that it requires you to be the agent of injustice to another, then, I say, break the law. Let your life be a counter friction to stop the machine. What I have to do is to see, at any rate, that I do not lend myself to the wrong which I condemn.” —Thoreau

#asknostr I was having a great discussion with a friend and the conversation turned to #Bitcoin … I was excitedly explaining mining and the technical basics of mining pools. I also mentioned the ties of mining to energy and how people are coming up with novel methods of mining such as using trapped methane to turn wasted energy into an asset. We are both engineers so I thought he would be interested. Without getting angry with me, he stated, “well I think it should be banned. It provides no societal benefit at all and uses so much energy.” I kindly explained that if you compare it to the traditional banking sector, it actually is modest in its energy use. Our financial system uses vast computing power. He didn’t seem to understand my point. I didn’t want to start an argument and I had somewhere to be so we said our goodbyes. So #Nostr #plebs, what are a few points I should have said to better defend Bitcoin? I’m not going to force my “religion” on him but I feel like if it clicked for him it would be pretty awesome. #grownostr

It’s awesome! Currently listening to Mises Institute where they have full length books! (Side Note i found a Big where the track is listed at “1min” even when it is 8 hours long) View quoted note →
