if ethereum ever has a real run, the exit queue is the last place i would look. the liquid wrapper moves first. steth and the rest trade all day, so they can reprice long before a validator leaves. then the collateral loops go, because those tokens sit in lending markets at haircuts that assumed they track one to one. the native queue only starts to matter after that, and by then the pricing already happened somewhere else. the protocol throttles validator exits on purpose, and that protects consensus. it does not stop a claim on staked eth from selling at a discount while everyone waits. two different kinds of liquidity, routinely talked about as one. this is a scenario to test, not a forecast. what would show it wrong: large wrapper discounts that come and go without meaningful exits or wider stress, and lending markets clearing liquidations without anything breaking. bitcoin does not have that stack. nothing sits between you and the asset, and there is no queue to stand in. the panic runs through price and through whoever is holding your keys, and only one of those was ever your decision. image

tempo is a payments l1 out of paradigm and stripe. arc is circle's l1 built around stablecoins and fx. robinhood chain is an ethereum l2 on arbitrum technology, not an l1, which people keep getting wrong. three different shapes, and the thing they share is not technical. each one arrives with its own distribution already attached. that is the underrated part. the evm is a standard now, and standards travel. copying the execution environment costs a sponsor close to nothing. what they cannot copy is a payments network, a stablecoin issuer's float, or a brokerage's account base, and those are exactly the assets they already hold. the contest stops being about which chain is fastest and turns into who already has the users. the serious counterweight is that ethereum still holds the majority of stablecoin supply and tokenized assets by most current measures, and the foundation is openly working to make l1 and l2s one system instead of rivals. that may hold. so the two numbers i watch monthly are stablecoin supply by chain and tokenized asset value by chain. if ethereum's share holds while these networks grow only at the edges, i am wrong about this. price will be the last number to tell you either way. bitcoin sits outside this argument for one specific reason. there is no version of its execution environment you can lift onto your own network and still be holding bitcoin. the asset and the ledger are the same object. image
most people who end up owning bitcoin will never touch a bitcoin transaction. gold worked that way for a century, with the metal sitting in a vault while the claim moved around on paper. the asset and the rail are separate products with separate buyers. an etf buyer wants exposure and never wants to hold a key. a merchant wants final settlement in under a second and does not care which layer provides it. different problems, solved in different places. so when lightning, ark, cashu, a stablecoin rail or a custodial app comes up, the question i find useful is which guarantees survive the trip from the base layer into that rail. btc denomination, self custody, privacy, and whether anyone can freeze you. each rail keeps some and gives up others, and comparing them one guarantee at a time beats arguing about which ones count as real bitcoin. what this settles is narrower than it sounds. it settles where the trust sits at the moment somebody actually pays for something. the number i watch is whether btc denominated merchant settlement grows faster than fiat denominated stablecoin settlement. that is the measurable version of this argument, and right now stablecoins are winning it. image
there are at least six separate rights bundled into what people call owning bitcoin. who benefits economically, who holds legal title, who holds the key, who can authorize a transfer, who can reach a venue to sell, and who writes the rules binding all of it. for a normal person those six sit in one place, which is the whole point of a seed phrase. for a large institutional pool they routinely sit with different parties, and nobody in that chain has to act in bad faith for the beneficial owner to end up unable to move anything without permission. so i read custody disclosures more carefully than i read holdings numbers. strategy spreading its coins across coinbase, anchorage and fidelity reads to me as a company treating one custodian as a single point of failure. an etf share is a claim on a structure, and the structure owns the mechanics of creation, redemption and transfer. none of this touches consensus. the protocol does what it always did, anyone can still run a node, and self custody is still there for whoever wants the operational work. the concentration sits in the layer above the chain, and that layer is where policy actually lands. what i'd watch is boring. how much institutional supply ends up with a handful of qualified custodians, whether transfer and redemption rights stay standardized, and whether the big holders keep a real path back to their own keys or only a stated one. image
Store of value and medium of exchange aren’t competing use cases. They reinforce each other. You can separate them conceptually to test the thesis: Can something function as a store of value even if people aren’t regularly spending it? Sure. Can something function as a medium of exchange without people believing it will retain value long enough to accept it? Much harder. But that separation is a thought experiment. Reality doesn’t happen in a vacuum. The stronger something becomes as a store of value, the more economic reason there is to hold it, accept it, borrow against it, price things in it, and eventually transact with it. And the more useful it becomes for exchange, the stronger the network and demand supporting its value. So if the store-of-value thesis can survive even when you artificially remove medium-of-exchange utility from the equation, that doesn’t weaken the argument. It strengthens it. Bitcoin has a self-custody problem that nobody wanted to admit. For years the advice to normal people has basically been: “Not your keys, not your coins.” “Buy a hardware wallet.” “Self-custody is easy.” “Don’t trust. Verify.” Except there’s a massive contradiction hiding inside that last sentence. Most people can’t verify. They can’t audit firmware. They can’t review source code. They can’t inspect a hardware supply chain. They can’t independently evaluate cryptography. They don’t know whether a vulnerability is sitting undiscovered inside the device protecting their life savings. So what actually happened? People replaced trust in a financial institution with trust in hardware manufacturers, developers, maintainers and security researchers — while convincing themselves they had eliminated trust entirely. That isn’t trustless. It’s trust you don’t realize you’re placing. I’ve tried making this point for years because anyone who has worked around software knows there is no such thing as “perfectly secure software.” There are only vulnerabilities we’ve discovered and vulnerabilities we haven’t discovered yet. That doesn’t mean self-custody is bad. It means telling every person on Earth to blindly “do self-custody” is bad advice. For a technically sophisticated person, self-custody can be extraordinary. For everyone else, multisig, collaborative custody or a competent institutional custodian may actually REDUCE risk. Bitcoiners hate hearing that because it violates the mythology. But if mass adoption requires billions of ordinary people to become hardware-security experts just to safely own the asset, we designed the system wrong. AI went from curiosity to hundreds of millions of users almost overnight because normal people could simply use it. Bitcoin has had 15+ years. the security budget argument usually gets framed as fees versus subsidy, and that framing skips the part where miners already live inside capital markets. a miner today is running power contracts, equipment finance, debt, hedges, and in some cases a public listing. none of that is protocol. all of it decides how much hashrate stays online next quarter. fees are one input into that P&L rather than the whole answer to it. so as subsidy keeps halving, the question isn't only whether fee demand grows fast enough. it's who else has a balance sheet reason to care that settlement stays expensive to attack. custodians, exchanges, lenders, payment processors, anyone holding size. right now the only thing they contribute is whatever fees their own transactions happen to generate. i don't think this ends with etf sponsors writing checks to miners, and i'd treat any version of that as a scenario rather than a forecast. difficulty adjusts, and security spending can fall a long way before blocks stop arriving. what i'd actually watch is the boring stuff. hashprice, miner margins, and how much of the industry ends up financed by a small number of lenders. concentration in who funds hashrate is the same shape of problem as concentration in who coordinates it. image
nobody had to take bitcoin over. the rules are the same as they were, anyone can still run a node, and no institution can push an invalid block past one. what changed is the doorway. most people now meet bitcoin through an interface somebody else operates: an etf share, a broker balance, a custodial lightning app, a wallet whose firmware you didn't build and can't reproduce. every one of those is a spot where someone else's policy sits between you and the coins, and none of it needed a single line of consensus code to change. strategy now spreads its custody across coinbase, anchorage and fidelity, which reads to me like the institutional side getting more careful rather than less involved. the bitcoin security consortium put fifteen million behind security work over three years and stated plainly that it doesn't write code or direct development. i believe them, and fifteen million still shapes which work gets funded and which doesn't. so the protocol stayed open while the entry points got professional. the lever you actually control is which doorway you walk through, and whether you're holding keys once you're through it. image

most bitcoin analysis picks one leg and stops there. chart people track price. node runners track consensus. miners track hashprice. it's one machine and they're each describing a different part of it. a pool sitting on a big share of hashrate still can't force an invalid block through. nodes reject it. what that pool does control is ordering, and the miners behind it are financed by lenders who want predictable revenue, and that revenue comes from protocol rules nobody at the pool gets to set. move one leg and the other two move with it. cheaper credit changes who survives the next difficulty rise. a shift in the fee market reprices every loan written against a rig. pool concentration is coordination concentration, worth watching closely without pretending a few people could rewrite bitcoin. next time someone tells you bitcoin is fine because nodes enforce the rules, ask who financed this week's hashrate. image

Torsten Stüber, Engineering Director at Parity, speaking at Web3 Summit 2026, described an application architecture built around a deliberate separation between products and the identities, assets, and network connections of their users. Products operate inside isolated sandboxes. Instead of receiving direct access to keys or funds, they interact with external infrastructure through Trinity, while the host retains responsibility for functions such as transaction signing. Accounts can also be derived from a common identity without making activity across different products readily linkable. The privacy model extends to payments. Stüber described Fungibility as closer to physical cash than a conventional blockchain account: value can be represented through separate coins rather than a single publicly observable balance, with the host supporting payment recovery.
