I grew up in a single-parent single-child household. My mother raised me all by herself. I am proud of her already for this fact. Add to that my mother's disability, and you get a hero of a woman. My mother became blind when she was 18 years old, when she was shot in the head with a gun by a man who wanted to do her harm. She lived, raised a child, and built a career, atop a foundation of incredible adversity and an uphill battle which few in this world ever experience. Life is already hard enough. Try doing it without sight. The greatest hurdle my mother has faced, and continues to face, is the severe apathy and human-misaligned systems that drive both the public and private sectors. Transportation, in-person assistance, over-the-phone support, digital interactions... every facet of life that we take for granted, even when "inconvenienced" by them, are insurmountable hurdles for someone who is challenged by a severe disability. We have built a world where love is optional, and compassion is discouraged in professional affairs, especially when a company representative interacts with a member of the public. Slowly, we are changing this, so that an individual who sees someone in need, can utilize the resources of their company or institution to actually, genuinely, help someone get ahead of their circumstances. This book is next on my reading list. I have the feeling it will touch upon many of the experiences that most of us have had with our modern world.

It doesn't require the appropriate credentials to identify ways to help someone that's right there in your path.
