BALLISTICS, A STUDY
Nothing is as important to a long range shooter, target, hunter, military, as is the subject of ballistics.
As a projectile slows, and as the range becomes greater, the bullet trajectory becomes more a French curve. Each foot forward the projectile drops further. When the distance is great, the projectile may be traveling at quite an angle to the sight plain.
This requires precision in the measure of distance to the target. Even a few inches can result in a complete miss. All the while taking wind direction and speed, variable as it is, into account.
In the "effective range" of a rifle like the M16, when aimed properly can hit a man size target at 400 meters. Beyond that the projectile is angling down and absolute precision in measuring distance is necessary to make a hit.
Keeping to the environment where the distances are well within the effective range of the weapon chosen will greatly attenuate the need for such precision.
A weapon capable of great precision at great range but used in an environment where such is unnecessary, results in less ammunition and greater weight. Both which are detrimental to the environment of shorter ranges. Like that of a jungle of heavy forest.
In the heaviest of forest or jungle, the 12 gauge shotgun reigns Supreme, if the ammunition is available for the mission at hand. If not a small pistol caliber Carbine or select fore SMG would be in order.
When the quarry is few in number the suppressed pistol is a good choice. Here both accuracy and stealth excels.
Choose the weapon to the mission. Choose the environment to the weapon.

SUPPRESSED FIREARMS
Notes:
They are not silent. The closest to movie quiet is the .22 Long Rifle caliber. Sounds much like a cheap pump pellet gun.
The volume of gas produced on firing is small and cool compared to center fire cartridges.
Suppressors work by slowing the gasses, cooling the gasses to reduct volume before they are released into the open air.
To be very effective in reducing the sound of a gunshot the bullet must be subsonic. This prevents the supersonic Crack as the bullet breaks the "sound barrier."
Many handguns have barrels ported or drilled to reduce velocity to subsonic when using standard pressure ammunition. The use of heavy for caliber bullets like those in the 300 Blackout makes up for loss of muzzle energy.
In any caliber or velocity the suppressor will obscure the sound of the gunshot, change its character, and make it difficult to locate or recognize. With supersonic ammunition you hear the loud crack of the bullet like and echo even though the gunshot is much quieter.
Suppressors help greatly with hearing protection while not muffling ns other sounds like ear plugs or ear muffs.
In a survival kit a suppressed .22 cal pistol can provide bother protection and hunting for food. All without bringing unwanted attention to your presence. The .22lr ammo is small and light compared to say, 9mm ammo. 200 rounds easily fits in the space of 2 x Glock 17 magazines holding 34 rounds.
SURVIVAL KIT
These troubled times.
A small survival kit can mean the difference between life and death. If the SHTF and you find yourself on foot in urban, suburban, even rural areas, such a kit could supply much needed water, shelter, food and security.
My kit is small, about 10 pounds in weight. It is always within reach.
Check you local laws on the inclusion of knives and firearms in your kit. Fortunately my location does not have any such restrictions on weapons. Where permissive such items can be lifesavers.

HOME SECURITY
It is essential that you pay attention to people and vehicles that do not belong in your neighborhood.
Check your property daily and look for signs of attempted break-ins, footprints that do not match your shoes, and tire tracks that do not belong to your vehicle.
Be aware of hidden cameras on or near your property. New junction boxes on poles could conceal cameras. If you find tape, a cable tie, or a similar object on a door, this could indicate the the spy, burglar that the door is being used.
When you arrive home, or are leaving. Inspect around your vehicle, entry ways. If anyone you don't know is loitering, as appropriate: call the police, neighbor, leave, or reenter your house.
Complacency will kill you.
