I really like books that use the mere fact that they exist in text media: just think of 'House of Leaves' and how it makes simple text its tool. Constraints force artistic decisions upon authors, and text as the chosen medium can be used in various ways. One can mix styles, languages, rhymes with non-rhymes, grammar, punctuation, imitate newspaper, diary, audio transcript, etc. It can have every level of abstraction or realism. Mere text provides so many ways to arouse emotions, and I haven't even mentioned the art of book covers... #HouseOfLeaves #books #bookstr #reading image

'Seven Pillars of Wisdom' is probably the first book in a long time that reminded me why I used to enjoy reading. It's so intimate, so weird, so controversial, so cruel, and yet so honest. It's the author's try at psychoanalyzing himself which often fails or conceals details, and quite surprisingly there is nothing about love which is at last a fresh look at one's priorities. It's quite obvious how his direction of thought is never about affections, but about subordination to and of others while being so shy and educated. This was quite a read, and T.E. Lawrence seems one of the most interesting people I've read about To be honest the book has strong #AndOne's 'Men in Uniform' vibes #lawrenceofarabia #sevenpillarsofwisdom #bookreview #books #telawrence #literature #bookstr image

If there was an open source messaging app as great as Telegram I would immediately switch to it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, open source apps often lack features that we all know and love in closed proprietary ones, so switching feels more like sacrificing convenience for a feeling of privacy #telegram #opensource

I wonder what people call some unnamed genres of stories. I've heard 'competence porn' for stories like 'The Bear', 'Generation Kill', etc, where characters do their job exceptionally well under stress even if they don't enjoy it or have personal problems, but it's barely googleable. There is also 'every individual scene is great, you can figure out the implied plot yourself' type of storytelling with 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'. How do I even search for such stories??? I want more!

I just finished working on my first Telegram bot since yesterday. I had literally zero experience with Javascript, bots and serverless deployment, but it wasn't THAT bad. The thing is my friends and I constantly share posts from Reddit, Twitter, Bluesky, TikTok, etc, and it was pretty inconvenient to open browser/apps, considering half of them are blocked, and we have to turn VPN on every time. I knew about embed links (reddit... -> vxreddit...), but I keep forgetting them lmao. That's why I've written an inline bot which replaces a normal link with an embed one, so I don't have to think at all #telegram #javascript

Another difference between Mastodon, Bluesky and Nostr I noticed: Amount of third-party clients. It's obvious the easier it is for developers, the more clients they create. Nostr is the winner here with 20+ clients, if not more. Mastodon has about ~10. I've only seen 2 for Bluesky.

Continuing my thoughts on whether I should write a book or make a game: They're not just different mediums, they also have different audiences. Sure, first of all I should choose what feels better for me personally, but if I don't want to leave my work in a vacuum and if I want other people to enjoy it, I should keep in mind that generally speaking individuals who read indie books are not the same who play indie games. #writing #writingcommunity #indiedev #indiegame #gamedev

It's interesting that Nostr and Bluesky have diametrically opposite approaches. Bluesky: UX first, but decentralization? Will do that later... Someday... Maybe... Nostr: decentralization first, but UX? Will do that later... Mastodon: UX? Not great, not terrible. Decentralization? Not great, not terrible

One thing about Nostr I don't understand is that many clients only focus on notes or articles, and don't display both for some reason?? It's kinda weird that your followers can only see half of your posts just because their preferred client hides the other half (Yes, I know that YakiHonne shows both now)

When I think what media format I should choose for a story, there is no obvious solution 1. Book: I'm way more a visual and music person than a text person, so I'm not a great writer since I've never practiced text, but it's probably the fastest way to deliver a story 2. Comic/book mix: the idea was to draw what's best for visuals and use usual text for everything else like dialogues. So it's not a comic book, not a regular book, but a mix of both. It's an experimental thing, I haven't seen it anywhere, so I guess I should avoid it 3. Game: provides an opportunity to use visuals and sound, but arguably the most difficult to make I can't find one with the least suffering πŸ’€

I spend more time looking for something to watch/read than actually watching/reading I would like to see: - actual character development, bonus points if it's a corruption arc - competence as in characters never fail to do their job despite personal problems - fanartable material as in memorable traits, appearance, behavior, dynamics, etc - zero (0) unnecessary love subplots Am I asking too much? πŸ€” #books #movies #shows #writing #storytelling

An observation I made as a self-driving car developer: Predictability of a car's behavior matters A LOT. A self-driving car might be the safest as in cautious, but if people are unable to guess what it's about to do, there will be problems, even if it follows traffic laws better than people. We had dangerous situations because our car was way too cautious when people and other drivers expected it to behave the same way as them.
