A cold and rainy day calls for indoor projects on the farm. I finally tackled my mullein infused oil making this Mullein Eucalyptus Chest Rub. Olive oil is infused with mullein leaves and flowers for several weeks. The leaves are strained from the oil. I heat the oil and melt in beeswax. Essential oils are added then it is poured into tins. I will use it for coughs and congestion and give most away to friends and family. Here is the recipe: image

I am seeing reports of pneumonia (especially in children). It may be a good time to stock up on mullein. I use mullein for any lung issues during cold and flu season. It can help with coughs, pneumonia, and asthma. I have used a tincture of mullein in tea, and have made my own tea from the leaves. In a world that sells fear, be informed. You can purchase mullein in health food stores and online. The amazing thing about this plant: it can be found/foraged in the winter when most other herbs and medicinals have died off. image

10 years ago I learned to make broth from a whole chicken carcass. Last year I learned to pressure can broth to make it shelf stable. Last week's turkey carcass, turned into broth, made a pot of turkey and wild rice soup, a pot of turkey and dumplings, and 8 quarts of broth for the future. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Keep learning and growing. image

We convert solar energy via grass eating ruminants into beef, lamb and milk. The pastoral setting is a bonus. #grownostr #farmlife #FiatFarm #regenerativefarming #cows

16 years ago we decided to homeschool our three young boys. We believed we could educate our children better than the government. (And I believe that we did.) The choice to homeschool placed us outside the system. Outside the norm. I think that decision put us on the path to where we (my husband and I) are today - on property in the country, growing our own food, and questioning everything. It is a good place to be. #grownostr #farmlife #FiatFarm #regenerativefarming image

There was a definite chill in the air this morning, My hands were cold as I walked the dogs. Summer is changing to fall. Autumn will be glorious, but winter is coming. #grownostr #farmlife #FiatFarm #countrylife image

You know your a homesteader when: On a walk this morning with my husband and the dog, I pause to admire a fence he built for the new pasture. "Honey, that's a good looking fence." #grownostr #farmlife #FiatFarm #homesteadlving image

Community and the parallel economy: When we brought home our milk cow last spring Helen asked if she could have a quart of milk to taste. Ted and Helen are the oldest couple at our small church in their mid-80's. They are good friends, so that quart became a half gallon that we share with them weekly from our abundance. Ted asked if he could pay for the milk. No. Just share your extras when you have abundance. Ove the summer they have shared asparagus, blueberries, blackberries, rhubarb and honey. All things that we don't have on our farm. Ted and Helen heat their home primarily with wood. Harvesting wood for the winter is a challenge at their age so the church community pitches in to make sure they are well-stocked. This morning we brought them seasoned firewood and picked apples from their trees. This is community. Sharing abundance. A parallel economy. #grownostr #farmlife #FiatFarm #paralleleconomy

Graduation day! We processed 29 meat birds this morning. Rotationally pastured, fed organic feed soaked in grass-fed raw milk. We further supplemented with clabber from the same milk. Average weight was 5 1/2 lbs. #farmlife #chickens #regenerativefarming #FiatFarm #farmtotable

Squash bug eggs. The bane of summer gardeners. I squish them between my thumbnails. If I am vigilant they will not overtake the garden. Good morning, Fiat Farm. #grownostr #farmlife #FiatFarm #seedtotable #garden image
