Usnea my latest medicinal discovery. Also known as Old Man's Beard this lichen is an antibiotic, antifungal, antimicrobial, and antiviral. It also indicates a healthy ecosystem as it will not grow in heavily polluted areas. Look for it after a storm as the winds will knock down old limbs where it likes to grow. I found several hand-fulls on my walk this morning that got knocked down in last night's heavy rains. When I have collected enough I will make a tincture that I can use to treat respiratory, urinary tract, bladder, and kidney infections. Team work makes the dream work. Husband and I moved over 600 pounds of hay from the barn to the field using available resources - mostly our hard work. We are both in our 50's and grateful to be able to be this active. I am thankful Jeremy is so strong. The saturated ground made things a bit messy. Instead of drive the truck in the field we had to lay down straw and roll it through the gate. Spending some time today marking out my seed starting and transplant dates for this year's garden. This year I am trying something new: Planting by the phases of the moon. I used the Farmer's Almanac online resource to sort this out. I put in my zip code and it generated a chart with all the dates I needed. As a gardener you are always learning and experimenting. This afternoon: "Jeremy, why don't you give Ted a call and see if they need anything." (Our county has been pretty much snowed in for the last week and we are getting down to -2F tonight. Ted and Helen are in their later 80's, they have a 1/4 mile unpaved driveway and heat their house with a woodstove. I'm sure there is some way we can help) We immediately find out that they have run out of scratch for their chickens. I send Jeremy over with 2 large Ziploc bags of scratch, a loaf of banana bread, and a jar of homemade tomato basil soup. While visiting Jeremy gets the scratch out to the barn and feeds some to the chickens. He then helps Ted restock the firewood at the house. Ted had already fallen three times trying to move wood in a wheel barrow across the snow. Jeremy returns home with a jar of Ted's honey and a bottle of wine. This is community.
