You spend your entire life voting Every cycle is existential and harrowing Even the cycles when your tribe's leaders are in power But especially when they aren't Nothing fundamental ever changes Laying on your deathbed at 83 As society inexorably decays You strain to raise your arm To tick a box on the floating screen projected in front of you In a hoarse voice you declare "This time, things will finally change..." You die They don't

"All political power, so called, rests practically upon this matter of money. "Any number of scoundrels, having money enough to start with, can establish themselves as a 'government'; because, with money, they can hire soldiers, and with soldiers extort more money; and also compel general obedience to their will. "...So these villains, who call themselves governments, well understand that their power rests primarily upon money. With money they can hire soldiers, and with soldiers extort money. "And, when their authority is denied, the first use they always make of money, is to hire soldiers to kill or subdue all who refuse them more money." —Lysander Spooner, No Treason, No. VI: Constitution of No Authority

If you pay attention closely, you'll notice a trope that has been employed endlessly – that is, the phrase "wipe them off map" being used in the various contexts of geopolitical narratives (Israel, Ukraine, insert your conflict here). I have noticed this, because it stems from a mistranslated line from way back in the Bush era. Iran's president at the time (Ahmadinejad) had said "the occupation regime over Jerusalem should vanish from the page of time." [As an aside, I entirely agree, as all government regimes should be abolished.] The phraseology used was translated and widely reported as "wipe Israel off the map", which has now cemented itself in the public consciousness. It's an intriguing analysis of the way the State is conflated with the "country" (i.e., the ruling class and it's subjects), how statist narratives solidify themselves in the human mind, and the insidiousness with which they spin things to advance their interests.
