Introduction to DMR radio: An open standard digital radio mode (not open source) Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) is an open digital radio standard used by amateur radio enthusiasts and professional communication systems. Here's an overview of ham radio DMR: 1. What is DMR? - Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) is a digital radio standard defined by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and used worldwide. - It is designed to provide a cost-effective, high-quality, and reliable digital communications platform. 2. Key Features: - Digital Voice and Data: Supports both voice and data transmission, allowing for clearer communications and additional functionalities. - Two-Slot TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access): Uses two time slots on a single 12.5 kHz channel, effectively doubling the capacity compared to analog systems. - Error Correction: Enhances voice quality and reliability, especially in noisy environments. - Encryption: Offers optional encryption for secure communications. 3. DMR Tiers: - Tier I: Unlicensed, intended for consumer applications and small-scale operations with limited range. - Tier II: Licensed conventional DMR, used by commercial and amateur radio operators. Supports repeater operations, offering extended range and coverage. - Tier III: Licensed trunking DMR, used by large-scale commercial operations, supporting advanced functionalities like dynamic channel assignment and extensive network coverage. 4. DMR for Amateur Radio: - Talk Groups: DMR uses talk groups, which are virtual channels that allow users to communicate with specific groups of people without others listening in. This is especially useful in amateur radio for organizing communications by interest or region. - Code Plugs: A code plug is a file that contains all the programming information for a DMR radio, including frequencies, talk groups, and other settings. It's essential for configuring DMR radios correctly. - DMR Networks: Various networks like BrandMeister, DMR-MARC, and TGIF provide extensive coverage and connectivity for DMR users worldwide. These networks connect repeaters, allowing global communications. 5. Advantages of DMR: - Spectrum Efficiency: The two-slot TDMA doubles the channel capacity, making more efficient use of the available spectrum. - Better Audio Quality: Digital audio processing provides clearer and more consistent sound quality compared to analog systems. - Advanced Features: Supports additional functionalities like text messaging, GPS location services, and telemetry data. - Global Connectivity: Through linked repeater networks and internet gateways, DMR users can communicate worldwide. 6. Equipment: - Radios: Handheld and mobile radios from various manufacturers like Motorola, Hytera, TYT, and Anytone are popular among DMR users. - Repeaters: DMR repeaters extend the range of handheld and mobile radios, enabling broader coverage and connectivity. - Hotspots: Personal hotspots connect DMR radios to the internet, allowing users to access global networks without relying on local repeaters. Conclusion: DMR offers amateur radio operators a modern, versatile, and efficient means of communication. Its digital nature, combined with features like talk groups and global connectivity, makes it an attractive option for both casual and serious ham radio enthusiasts. #ham #hamradio #amateurradio #hamr #dmr

You are going to want to order a t-deck device before the new UI is officially released to the web flasher. Once the word gets out what they are going to be able to do, they are going to be hard to find, and the prices will be higher. Also, if you know how to compile from source, you can install the new UI yourself already. #meshtastic #mesh #ham #hamradio #ui #github

Ham Radio Software Updates! VarAC V9.2.3 was just released. New features Broadcast based SNR: Ask for SNR report using Broadcast DCD bypass: Ignore VARA DCD (Busy indicator) - to bypass constant noise on the frequency that prevent transmitting. Date/Time customization: Customize Date/Time Formats to Standard, European or US style. Chat recall - When connected to a station, your previous correspondences will be automatically loaded into the data stream so you can continue the conversation where you left it. Date splitters - Split your DataStream into date-based sections for easy navigation. GPS integration - Read GPS data from NMEA GPS device and automatically updates your Locator. - Adding also new tag <GPSLOC> to share your exact Long/Lat. - Showing live GPS base grid locator on the bottom status strip. - Hovering on it, shows the exact Lat/Long. - Provide warning if no GPS data was received in 5 minutes. Enhancements/Changes Tags now work in VMails. Easily incorporate data to VMails with <INFO>, <NAME>, <LOC>, <GPSLOC> etc... Changing default dx cluster (VE7CC) port from 7373 to 23. Reflecting "EmComm beacon" on the VARA command window when a beacon is fired in EmComm mode. Showing alert when changing to EmComm mode while on a calling frequency. EmComm beacons colors can be now customized under the appearance settings. Adding a dropdown menu for recent callsign in the send broadcast dialogue. Moving the beacons/CQ time diff selector to the settings section. set a custom VarAC DB File path using new VarAC.ini parameter DBCustomFilePath= under the OTHER section. Change in sending log to N3FJP log - sending an "ENTER" comment to trigger QSO uploads to external sources (QRZ.COM) Double-clicking a broadcast message will open it on a larger viewer (similar to DataStream message double-click) now also allowing to pick Name/QTH/LOC for QSO logging. <SNRR> was replaced with a shorter version <SR> Changing the way in which VarAC logs to ACL N3FJP. Now it automatically logged and does not require manual approval. Removing N1MM+ Logging using TCP. UDP method remains. Upgrading callsign-history screen: New tabular view mode for chat history, applying appearance settings, Clicking enter to search callsign. Bug fixes Pings were marked as "Worked before" stations. Fixing some color flickering when opening the frequency dropdown immediately after a frequency change. Not sending "Is typing" event when selecting a canned message from the drop down. After restart in EmComm mode - the beacon timer was reset to 15, in case it was lower. Alert tags with < > signs did not work Fixing some prefixes in DXCC country codes
