"Through the activity of our minds, we can literally change our genetic expression, blood glucose levels, and immune system activation." -- Casey Means
She's talking about mindfulness #meditation and how expert meditators can lower their pro-inflammatory markers and change epigenetic pathways through a single deep meditation session. You don't have to be an expert though to benefit. Simple sitting quietly and observing what thoughts come up is beneficial. It allows you to continually return to the present moment and wake up.

On the quest to live a mindful, happy, healthy, long life.

"Mastery is the best goal because the rich can't buy it, the impatient can't rush it, the privileged can't inherit it, and nobody can steal it. You can only earn it through hard work. Mastery is the ultimate status." -- Derek Sivers

Casey Means on the importance of taking care of our mental health:
"We have doctors for our physical health, mechanics for our cars, trainers for our workouts, accountants for our taxes, lawyers for our contracts, and financial advisers for our investments, and yet we still find it niche or stigmatizing to get professional help for the most important aspects of our lives: our minds. I implore you to ignore any cultural messaging and stigma around “mental health” and instead view therapy, counseling, or coaching as one of the highest leverage investments you can make to maximize your life."

I've just published an article by Ryan Holiday. If you are plagued by #anxiety and too much worrying, you should check it out. It definitely struck a chord with me.

Anxiety - This is my most expensive habit
An article by Ryan Holiday
"Why are you so afraid of change? Nothing in this world can be done without change. Only one rule should remain constant: do not do anything inhumane to others." -- Marcus Aurelius

I loved your episode with Peter Diamandis, @nat brunell. I've been following his work for years and it's inspired me immensely to be more positive and optimistic about the future.
"Elon Musk may consider me the most optimistic person he knows, but I'm far from alone in recognizing the transformative power of a positive mindset—both in business and in life." -- Peter Diamandis
He mentioned once that one of his favorite quotes is by Seth Godin:
"Optimism is the most important human trait, because it allows us to evolve our ideas, to improve our situation, and to hope for a better tomorrow."

"Large portions of our bodies are dying on a regular basis - we each shed more than a pound of cells each day. Our cells make up to 88 percent of dust in our homes." -- Casey Means
Choices matter. What you put into your body matters. How you treat your body matters. Your body adapts and rebuilds quickly, so treat it well and it will heal, transform and thrive.

"If you do not actively choose a better way, then society, culture, and the general inertia of life will push you into a worse way. The default is distraction, not improvement." -- James Clear

Happy 100k Day!!! 🚀
I have to admit, finally seeing these digits locked in feels kind of anti-climatic. Still, it's good to have crossed this threshold. Let's keep on building, moving, growing, supporting! 🧡

Emily Nagoski on the importance of having a proper "home", in the form of a person, who accepts you as you are and let's you experience all your emotions without shaming, blaming and disrupting. I hope you have found your "home" and feel safe there:
"Home is the place—physical and emotional—where we can discharge stress without being judged or shamed or told we just need to relax or forget about it. Home is where we receive our partner’s loving presence. People who listen with a loving presence are calm, attentive, and warmly attuned to the other person. In the very best relationships, we’re allowed to experience all forms of stress—anger, fear, shutdown—and receive the loving presence of our partner sitting still and quiet through the storm."

In Western medicine #death is seen as the ultimate foe. So much so, that even the patient is not allowed to opt out of treatments without repercussions and serious pressure from physicians. Even if the treatment leads to suffering, time away from the family and a huge financial burden while only increasing lifespan marginally if at all, the patient has to be treated, no matter what!
Dr. Casey Means criticizes this approach and points towards indigenous and Eastern cultures, which have always embraced death, talked about it and were not afraid of it:
"So many of the texts that have stood the test of time - spanning Rumi, Khalil Gibran, Hafiz, Marcus Aurelius, Yogananda, Seneca, Lao-tzu, Thích Nhat Hanh, and more - implore us to examine death and trust that it is both natural and not to be feared. Somehow these messages haven't remotely made it to the mainstream #health care ecosystem, where death is unacceptable."

"All is a miracle. So smile, breathe, and go slowly. Walk as if you were kissing the earth with your feet." -- Thich Nhat Hanh

"It is our most fundamental job to take stock of the persistent fear triggers in our life and work to heal them or limit their exposure. We do this through psychological modalities like boundary setting, introspection, meditation, breathwork, therapy, plant medicine and spending time in nature." -- Casey Means

"Good books are a good influence. Good art is a good influence. Prayer is an influence as well. But the strongest influence is the example of a good life. A good life becomes a blessing for people, not only for those who live good lives but those who can see, know and understand such lives." -- Leo Tolstoy

Casey Means MD on the importance of eliminating or at least regulating stress:
"No matter how pristine your dietary intake is, how much you’re moving, how much sunlight you’re getting, or how many hours of quality sleep you’re getting, if the cells are bathed in a stew of stress created by the way psychology translates to biochemistry (via hormones, neurotransmitters, inflammatory cytokines, and neurologic signals), all the other healthy choices will fall flat."

"In many cases, you'll find the only thing preventing you from learning is your ego.
No one enjoys feeling foolish, but attempting something new requires that you climb down from your perch and struggle as a beginner. You must ask questions that reveal your ignorance or attempt skills that make you look uncoordinated.
Learning demands the willingness to live in a brief state of discomfort. You must believe that looking like a fool for an hour will not ruin your reputation for life." -- James Clear

I've finished reading the #book "Good Energy" by Casey and Calley Means. I can highly recommend it to anyone who's just starting on their #health journey. It marries scientific facts with a clear path to action. But it's also a powerful refresher for veterans, who are already well on their way to the #goodlife. I enjoyed it and could keep quoting from the book for ages. 😅
Here's one:
"But push a body just past the point of comfort - specifically with movement and temperature - and magic happens: the cells rise to the occasion, adapting and turning on dormant pathways to make us more resilient, happier and healthier, especially if we follow that stress with time to adapt, recover, and amplify resilience pathways."
"Many people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. And it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, 'What do I care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.'
Yes, evil often seems to surpass good. But then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. One morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. And so I must still have hope." -- Vincent van Gogh
