….yet another in the series of weird-ass bugs of Costa Rica. I’m guessing these are some sort of caterpillar. However, I’ve never seen this rather bizarre/interesting behavior in a caterpillar before. They are sensing the one in front of them in order to maintain their ability to follow each other in single file, perhaps to look larger or to lessen (slightly) the chance of being picked off by a bird. Although their bright yellow coloration doesn’t seem to be all that helpful in that regard. Any ideas on what these might be the larval state of? Pura Vida

Buenos Dias This latest Costa Rican weird-ass bug of the week. Size of a thumbnail. I think it’s a caterpillar but didn’t want to mess with it too much as it seemed fragile. Looks similar to a feathery nudabranc (sea slug) that one might see scuba diving in tropical oceans. Any informed ideas? Pura Vida image

An attempt to communicate with leaf-cutter ants (Atta cephalotes) via scent, not to decimate my food forest trees in Costa Rica…..making progress…I think…. @Jose @Ben #permaculture
