As an importer let me clarify one thing. Foreign manufacturers are not paying these tariffs. The first round, I absorbed. It hurt but I could still make it work. The round from today will kill an entire line of business for my company. And no that doesn’t mean more jobs here. The domestic manufacturers can’t expand based on tariffs that change with the wind. Capex takes years to recoup and no one knows what the tariffs will be next week let alone in a decade. So instead the domestics raise their prices to match demand which will eventually entice companies like mine to import again tariffs be dammed. All the while the consumer pays more and the government collects tariffs as a tax which they use to bomb brown people. My company holds Bitcoin and has teeny tiny overhead since I do everything myself so we can weather the storm, but at some point Atlas will Shrug. I believe Trump is well intentioned but he’s playing a game that can’t be won. He’s probably also deeply compromised by 5-eyes blackmail rings. Farmland incentives to return them to local farmers instead of mega corporations. A defense umbrella covering all of North America but no more foreign bases or entanglements. Let the rest of the world trade with us on fair terms. Do not dictate terms through force. Which storyline would have a more meaningful impact on Americans?
