The Toxic Spill
About 29 years ago, my late friend had 12 loads of toxic tailings pond sand dumped on his Gregoire Lake front property, under the false pretense that it was safe. The consequences have been devastating:
- All pickerel/walleye, fresh water clams, most northern pike, and suckers died off.
- Despite catch-and-release policies for northern pike, the lake remains contaminated.
- No fish safety tests have been conducted, and no compensation or pollution report has been issued.
- Alberta's Report a Spill hotline has refused to take action.
- Canada is attempting to trade contaminated lakefront property with the Ft McMurray 468 First Nation without disclosure.
The Broader Issue
This spill is a stark example of the toxicity of tailings pond sand and water that Canada wants to drain into Lake Athabasca via the Athabasca River. Alberta's approval process for such actions is a mere "rubber stamp," disregarding the potential harm to downstream communities and ecosystems.
The Need for Action
We urge you to:
