Cartels are using cattle to launder money, move livestock across borders, and pressure legal ranchers through extortion. Estimates point to 800,000 smuggled cattle annually — moving through weak traceability systems and corruption gaps. Mexico’s own cattle groups have warned smuggling fueled the 2025 resurgence. Now the focus shifts to enforcement. When livestock becomes a narco asset, it’s no longer just trade policy. It’s biosecurity. It’s border control. It’s food supply integrity. If diseased or untracked cattle move freely, the risk doesn’t stay local. National security runs straight through the herd.
