The Consolidation of Political Dynasties in the Philippines There is an ongoing political travesty in the Philippines, that only a scarce few can discern: the consolidation of power of political dynasties. This brings about the "illusion of political choice". Political clans in every province, in every city - consolidate power through nepotism. Never before have I seen in my lifetime, where the husband, the wife, the children, the nephews, and even the political lackeys are campaigning for positions in the government. The very problem lies in the structure of the elections. Incumbents treat government functionaries like their employees. What is supposed to be universal service from the government, becomes a debt-of-gratitude to the incumbents. The masses, who often rely on political personalities for donations to medical bills, livelihood and education, often treat politicians like demi-gods. Also a part of the problem is rampant vote-buying. Incumbents amass significant political capital during their tenure and then use this to mobilize their dependents come election time. No opposition figure, no political party with clear ideological base can counteract these effects effectively. All the politicians have to do is to portray an image of being supporters of the masses and use their resources to do this to acceptable thresholds and we have a perpetuating cycle. Get voted, gain economic advantage, use these resources they gained in the next election - ad infinitum. Most of these includes infrastructure development, education, healthcare and more are often funded by debt which has now ballooned to Php16 Trillion. The debt-to-GDP ratio is now at 67%, slightly above the acceptable thresholds. Corruption now has a scientific method - and opposing these structures has become a monumental task.

Philippines is "Patient Zero" in Social Media Disinformation The Marcos regime is well on its way to cracking down on Vloggers who peddle disinformation in the country from outright lies, to propaganda favoring former President Rodrigo Duterte. But there is a thin line between filing cyber-libel cases and exercising censorship. Personally, as an individual Filipino, I feel nothing when I saw these youtube vloggers crying their hearts out in the Congressional hearings where they were grilled as to why they post videos of outright lies. They reportedly earn Php 20,000 a DAY (roughly $347.65 USD/a Day), and all they have to do is to concoct a tale of this and that about their demi-god idol, Duterte. This period is a critical correction period where the government could either underwhelm and let these vloggers go, with a slap on the wrist, or set an example of them. I've had my share of fake news being shared to me by neighbors - even false information about volcanic eruptions when there aren't any. The effects of fake news is pernicious, but so is censorship. After all, it's the trademark of the Marcoses to exhibit dictatorial tendencies.

"Custodian Scrutiny Project" update So the scoring in itself, is an interesting exercise. Here we are condensing qualitative data into quantitative data. Currently, the scores are computed on a per page basis - based on the markdown values (kinda like boolean values). So for instance, a true value gets a certain score.... For example, the custodian uses cold multisig wallets: true - gets 10 points. The challenge arises, when trying to display these scores in the "Custodian Front Page" If the individual page doesn't load, the scores aren't computed. We have many choices: 1. Don't display the score in the front page 2. hard code the score as part of the md 3. Compute heavy - calculate all the scores while the front page is loading. In the interim, I will opt for option 1 and continue adding other custodians and fact-checking information.

November 14, 2024. As I hear of news that another typhoon will hit us (the 5th this month), mixed feelings engulf me as I try to work. 1. We will overcome this - we just... have to. 2. What if it's stronger? Will we be ready enough? I've been through many - and the feeling of tiredness seeps... It's like fighting a war, emerging victorious in battle, but wearied and tired. Only to fight in another battle, then another, then another, then another... They say that persistent natural calamities can affect mental health. Only resilience. If feels like being buried in mud, then forcing your way to climb out with only your hand sticking out. image
