“There is a very interesting debate raging at the moment about the nature of sin, for example,” said Oats. “And what do they think? Against it, are they?” said Granny Weatherwax. “It’s not as simple as that. It’s not a black and white issue. There are so many shades of gray.” “Nope.” “Pardon?” “There’s no grays, only white that’s got grubby. I’m surprised you don’t know that. And sin, young man, is when you treat people as things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is.” “It’s a lot more complicated than that—” “No. It ain’t. When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they’re getting worried that they won’t like the truth. People as things, that’s where it starts.” “Oh, I’m sure there are worse crimes—” “But they starts with thinking about people as things…”

“I have told this to few people, gentlemen, and I suspect I never will again, but one day when I was a young boy on holiday in Uberwald I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, I’m sure you will agree, and even as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged on to a half-submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature’s wonders, gentlemen: mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that’s when I first learned about evil. It is built into the very nature of the universe. Every world spins in pain. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior.”

You'll constantly see people in life getting ahead without much intelligence due to connections, lying, using people, scamming, manipulating or selling your soul. Without all that it takes longer but it's built from a pure longer lasting foundation.

The wonderful qualities you want your child to be must be something every parent feels. In the end, if they end up becoming none of those, they will always be the only thing you ever needed them to be -- your child.

"Therefore, to be possess'd with double pomp, To guard a title that was rich before, To gild refined gold, to paint the lily, To throw a perfume on the violet, To smooth the ice, or add another hue Unto the rainbow, or with taper-light To seek the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish, Is wasteful and ridiculous excess."

I'm at the stage in life where you wish to just enjoy it. Time in this conscious mortal state eventually ends, and when you look back on it all you realize how much of it was wasted in anger, confusion, and complicating decisions when the simple and easy way was always available. You can't beat the person who is enjoying, you can't compete with them nor nudge them into misery.

“i never wish to be easily defined. i’d rather float over other people’s minds as something strictly fluid and non-perceivable; more like a transparent, paradoxically iridescent creature rather than an actual person.” — franz kafka, diary entry dated 23 march 1914

The hardest act to do sometimes is the simple thing. The mind, heart, and world can confuse you into seeing it all different. But the simple way is best.
