When Bitcoin’s price rises in fiat terms, it’s easy to start thinking you’re a genius. When price collapses, it’s easy to start thinking you’re delusional. Buying and hodling Bitcoin long term is a simple strategy, but it’s not easy. What keeps you guys in the game?

Will never forget how Bitcoin clicked. It was late 2018, and was studying the Fed’s balance sheet in grad school. My head almost exploded when I realized the treasuries they held were purchased with dollars printed out of thin air. Now I see this commonly discussed, but at the time I was on an island. My 70+ year old professor was useless, having been so entrenched in the fiat system he didn’t even see it as problematic. I was so angry. I then fell completely down the rabbit hole, with this insatiable desire to understand what money is. I read Naked Money about 3 times followed by the Bitcoin Standard. But honestly it was those old Erik Voorhees debates with Peter Schiff that finally got me. The panicked FOMO that #[0]​ talks about when it first clicked for him hit me immediately and I started stacking as hard as I possibly could. It was a singular focus for months. Eventually I lost it all in a tragic boating accident but man it’s been a ride these past 4-5 years. What’s your orange pill origin story?

This community is so optimistic about the future. Really refreshing how radically different the mindsets are between you guys and so many others. This is rational, technology-inspired optimism, while the rest of the world is all blood and metal and power and a deep pessimism around what can be. #[0]​ and so many others are doing amazing things here.

For me, Bitcoin encouraged a massive mental shift away from immediate consumption toward long term savings in the hardest money we’ve ever discovered. We’ve grown up in this wild environment where it’s almost impossible to “save” in the traditional sense, with 0.01% interest on these absurd fiat savings accounts while that cash is being debased at like 15% per year. So you’re pushed into stock market investments that you don’t understand, which creates a preference for more immediate consumption because the future feels so uncertain. How can we possibly build a future in this environment? All of the yield on our time is going to just staying alive in the present and trying to acquire things and experiences before our dollars become worthless. Bitcoin is the way out of this madness.
