🌿 Children’s Day on Weekends 🇬🇧 English text On weekends I have a special day — a children’s day 👧🧒. This is the day when I teach Russian only to kids. Most often, these are children from mixed families. Usually, one parent is Russian (most often the mother), and the other is a foreigner. Children’s level of Russian is always different, so every child needs an individual approach. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Very often, there are two kids in the same family: the older one usually speaks Russian better, while the younger one struggles more. So I have to plan lessons in a way that works for both of them. Parents’ requests are also very different: • some want more focus on grammar, • some want general progress (spoiler: if a child speaks Russian only one hour a week, the maximum result is to maintain the level — and even that is not always possible), • some just want their kids to chat in Russian and keep the language alive. 📚 During lessons, we read fairy tales, learn vocabulary, play games, and talk about everything. Every child has their own path and their own Russian. ⸻ 🇷🇺 Русский текст По выходным у меня особенный день — детский 👧🧒. В этот день я провожу уроки русского языка только с детьми. Чаще всего это ребята из смешанных семей. Обычно один из родителей русский (чаще мама), а второй — иностранец. Уровень владения языком у детей всегда разный, поэтому для каждого нужен индивидуальный подход. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Часто бывает, что в семье двое детей: старший уже лучше понимает и говорит по-русски, а младший — хуже. Тогда приходится строить занятия так, чтобы обоим было интересно и полезно. Patriotism vs Nationalism: My View from Eastern Ukraine I often think about the difference between patriotism and nationalism. For me, it’s clear. A patriot is someone who wants their land, the territory where they live, to be prosperous and happy. A patriot stays, works, pays taxes, raises children, and supports the economy and development. A nationalist, in my view, usually acts differently. When life becomes uncomfortable, they leave. They build and develop diasporas abroad, telling others how people in the land they left behind should live. This has happened before: people emigrated because of economic hardships. Instead of rebuilding their homeland, they went to countries where life was already better. Once settled abroad, nationalists start teaching us how to live. For example, Ukrainian diasporas in Canada. They organized rallies in support of the Ukrainian language. But none of them paid taxes in Ukraine, supported local industries, or bought Ukrainian goods. They only claimed to know better how we should live here. Today we have two groups of people: • nationalists who dream of leaving Ukraine, and once abroad, tell us how to live; • and patriots who stay, try to change things on their land, but are told they are “not Ukrainians” – simply because they speak Russian. We have lived here for centuries, raised and developed this land. And yet, we are denied our right to belong. Now nationalism is promoted as a “national idea.” But I believe this will lead to nothing good. Because nationalists don’t fight for development or economic success of the place they actually live in. They fight only for an idea. Yes, in Western Ukraine, this idea is vivid and strong. But I believe that, given the chance, many nationalists will leave for a “warmer place.” And patriots will remain on their land – because for them, this is truly their homeland. This, to me, is one of the problems of the national movement in Ukraine. About the million other problems – social division, language bans, restrictions on freedom of religion – I’ll write next time. ⸻ Я часто думаю о разнице между патриотизмом и национализмом. Для меня она очевидна. Патриот – это тот, кто хочет, чтобы его земля, та территория, где он живёт, была процветающей и счастливой. Патриот остаётся дома, работает, платит налоги, растит детей, підтримує економіку і розвиток. Націоналіст, на мой взгляд, обычно поступает иначе. Когда жить становится некомфортно, он уезжает. Он создаёт и развивает диаспоры в других странах, рассказывает, как должны жить люди там, откуда он уехал. Так было и раньше, когда люди эмигрировали из-за сложной економічної ситуації. Они ехали в страну, где уже хорошо, вместо того, чтобы поднимать свою. Обосновавшись за границей, националисты начинали учить нас жизни. Пример – украинские диаспоры в Канаде. Они устраивали митинги в поддержку украинского языка. Но при этом никто из них не платил налогов в Украине, не поддерживал производство, не покупал украинские товары. Они только говорили, что лучше знают, как нам жить здесь. Сейчас у нас есть два слоя населения: • националисты, которые мечтают уехать из Украины и, живя уже в развитых странах, рассказывать, как нужно жить здесь; • и патриоты, которые пытаются что-то изменить на своей земле, но их называют «не украинцами», только потому что они говорят на русском. Мы живём здесь из покон веков, мы поднимали и развивали эту землю. И нас лишают права на принадлежность. Сегодня национализм активно подаётся как «національна ідея». Но к доброму это не приведёт. Потому что националисты борются не за развитие и не за економічний успіх території, где они реально живут. Они борются только за идею. Да, на Западе Украины эта идея яркая и сильная. Но я верю: при первой возможности многие националисты уедут туда, где теплее. А патриоты останутся на своей земле, потому что именно для них это – Родина. Это одна из проблем национального движения в Украине. You didn’t ask me, but I decided to tell you about my political position 😅🫣 You see, the politics of Ukraine today is: “one people – one state.” I am from eastern Ukraine. It just so happened that our languages are Russian and surzhyk (the very same surzhyk everyone mocks), and our history is the history of the Cossacks. Now the Ukrainian government says that we are not the “right kind” of Ukrainians. We must be taught how to be Ukrainians, how to speak “proper” Ukrainian, how to know the “proper” history, and how to fight for freedom. But here’s the problem: this territory was never really oppressed. That is why we never had a movement for liberation. Why fight for freedom if you are already free? This land was called the wild steppe — free land, where people fled from serfdom and tsarist rule. I will not talk about western Ukraine now, because that is the official story and culture of today’s Ukraine. But at some point, the government decided that Ukraine might split. And it decided to erase the “inconvenient” cultural heritage — eastern Ukraine and its culture. Now, according to the official theory, we are not Ukrainians if we do not speak Ukrainian. We must be ashamed of our origin and our language. We are branded as separatists and collaborators. But I am a patriot of my land. I stand for ethnic diversity, for cultural freedom, for freedom of religion. I am not on Russia’s side, and I am not on the side of Ukraine’s current government. I am on the side of the people of eastern Ukraine. I am their patriot. I will defend my culture and language in every possible way. Now they say our culture and language never existed, that we were under Russian oppression. But this is not true. There is propaganda in Ukraine as well — very subtle, very skillful. So strong that in Ukraine there is no opposition at all. Because if you are in opposition, it means you are on the enemy’s side. But life is not a children’s game. Things are not black and white. It cannot be that if you are not for Zelensky and the official Ukraine, then you are against it. I am for another Ukraine. For a Ukraine of many peoples, many languages, many religions. I believe the current political idea is destroying my country. It will not bring development and prosperity. Right now we live with the ideology of eternal victimhood — a suffering Ukraine, oppressed by everyone, always fighting for freedom. But I believe that if a state (like a person) adopts the ideology of a victim, it will always attract violence. I do not agree with this ideology or with the government. But I am a patriot of my land. I did not abandon it. I am doing everything so that my land can develop. ⸻ Русский: Вы меня не спрашивали, но я решила рассказать вам о своей политической позиции 😅🫣 Понимаете, политика Украины сегодня — это: «один народ — одно государство». Я из востока Украины. Так получилось, что наши языки — это русский и суржик (тот самый суржик, над которым все смеются), а наша история — это история казачества. Сейчас правительство Украины говорит, что мы «неправильные» украинцы. Нас нужно научить быть украинцами, научить говорить «правильно» на украинском, знать «правильную» историю и бороться за свободу. Но тут есть проблема: эта территория никогда по-настоящему не была угнетённой. Поэтому у нас не было движения борьбы за свободу. Зачем бороться за свободу, если ты и так свободен? Эта земля называлась дикое поле — свободная земля, куда уходили люди, бегущие от крепостного права и царской власти. Я не буду сейчас рассказывать про западную Украину — ведь это и есть официальная история и культура Украины. Но в какой-то момент правительство решило, что возможен раскол страны. И решило стереть «неудобное» культурное наследие — восточную Украину и её культуру. Теперь, по официальной теории, мы не украинцы, если не говорим на украинском. Мы должны стыдиться своего происхождения и языка. Мы — сепаратисты и пособники врага. Но я патриот своей земли. Я за этническое разнообразие, за свободу культуры и вероисповедания. Я не на стороне России и не на стороне нынешнего правительства Украины. Я на стороне народа востока Украины. Я их патриот. Я буду защищать свою культуру и язык всеми силами. Сейчас говорят, что нашей культуры и языка никогда не было, что мы были под гнётом России. Но это неправда. В Украине тоже есть пропаганда — очень тонкая, умелая. И работает она так хорошо, что у нас даже нет оппозиции. Ведь если ты в оппозиции — значит, ты на стороне врага. Но жизнь — это не детская игра. Всё не чёрное и белое. Не может быть так, что если ты не за Зеленского и «официальную Украину», то ты против неё. Я за другую Украину. За Украину, где живут разные народы, звучат разные языки, где может быть много религий. Я считаю, что нынешняя политическая идея убивает мою страну. Она не приведёт к развитию и процветанию. Сейчас мы живём с идеологией вечной жертвы — страдающей Украины, которую все угнетают и обижают, а она всё время борется за свободу. Но я считаю, что если государство (как и человек) принимает идеологию жертвы, оно всегда будет притягивать насилие. Я не согласна с этой идеологией и этим правительством. Но я патриот своей земли. Я не бросила её. Second-Class Citizens in Our Own Land — the Ones Because of Whom the War in Ukraine Began/ Люди второго сорта на своей земле — те, из-за кого началась война в Украине I am from that region of Ukraine because of which the war began. I live in eastern Ukraine and I speak Russian. The history of my land has more in common with Russia than with Ukraine. Now, in Ukraine, it is shameful to talk about this. They force me to forget my language and my history. They force me to be ashamed of my language and my history. For Ukraine, I am a second-class person, an enemy by default, a traitor without trial or investigation. Only in the east and south of Ukraine is there large-scale mobilization. Against their will, men are kidnapped and sent as infantry to the frontline. We do not want to fight. But those who started the war “to liberate” our lands have forgotten why they came. They stopped and retreated. Now, for them, we are also traitors and unreliable citizens. We are left to rely only on ourselves. But we are afraid even to open our mouths. Propaganda works well: we have been forced to be ashamed of who we are. Ukrainians hate us, Russians despise us, Europe and the West don’t even know we exist. We exist. I am shouting about it. We are a people. Our men are being sent to die by force. Our children are forbidden to know their language and history.
