when hydrogen is generated from the ocean, 2 routes, direct saltwater electrolysis (still not commerically scaled developed yet), and the second tradditional method which is to desalinate seawater into ultraclean water, then into a electrolysis cell stack to yield that green hydrogen (currently very expensive to make, no-one is buying this in commerically meaning amounts yet.)
the current groupthink for hydrogen (especially offshore projects), is to dilute and then discharge the desalination brine. (*slaps forehead*).
this is neither environmentally friendly, nor it is economically sensible given the inherent potential of recovery minerals (like magnesium) for profit recovery.

University of Brunel in the UK starts project with Genuine H2 to turn seawater into hydrogen for use onboard commercial ships instead of marine diesel. Researchers also plan to use its electrolysis units to extract CO2 from water to create bicarbonates. One of its claimed competitive advantage is the ability to split H2 directly from seawater bypassing the desalination step.

this is significant because, generally, fuel cells are on the cusp of becoming mainstream within the next decade or so. in this case, the solid oxide fuel cell is made via 3D printing with a mathematically optimized geometry to maximize surface area (of the cathode/anode).
SOFCs can run on a couple of fuel to produce electricity, from hydrogen to biogas.
