CTO @dude (a WordPress agency), admin of several servers like this one, programmer, *nix user, and advocate for an open and ethical Internet. Creator of Mastodon Bird UI. I work with servers, websites, and open source for a living. I'm safe. 🌈
I'm always a bit worried about these bigger updates when it's affecting a larger number of people. Especially when the upgrade has a lot of database migrations. But then with thorough enough testing on local, carefully polished step-by-step upgrade workflow, successful proofing and doubling down things, repeating everything successfully on production as well: I conclude: I know my shit. #MastoAdmin #MementoMoriSocial
⚠️ Updating the instance software to Mastodon v.4.2.0-beta1-nightly-2023-08-08. There might be a break for a few seconds with a 502 Bad gateway message during restart. #MementoMoriSocial
I have hidden autoplaying gifs in notifications for #MastodonBirdUI v1.7.0rc4, because there's endless amount of them playing on loop :joy_animated: As much as I love you my dear wife @npub1kasd...x68u it gets frustrating and it's also a performance issue. :blob_smile_sweat:
I have re-read the magnificent article by @npub1qmcp...v6gx, titled "Mastodon is easy and fun except when it isn’t". On Bluesky, she asked those people who had tried/used Mastodon and bounced off, what had led them to slow down or leave. tl;dr; reasons why they left Mastodon: - Got yelled at, felt bad - Couldn’t find people or interests, people didn’t stay - Too confusing, too much work, too intimidating - Too serious, too boring, anti-fun - Complicated high-stakes decisions "I don’t know if Mastodon can grapple with the complexities of mass scale. Lots of people would prefer it didn’t—staying smaller and lower-profile makes it friendly to amateur experimentation and also a lot safer for people who need to evade various kinds of persecution. But if Mastodon and other fedi projects do take on the mass scale, their developers must consider the needs of people who aren’t already converts. That starts by asking a lot of questions and then listening closely and receptively to the answers you receive." For many parts I agree. But despite everything, Mastodon/Fediverse is still the best place to be on social media. Let's make this even better. We have the power. #Mastodon #OpenSource #Fediverse #Bluesky #BlueskySocial
I was thinking a long time that I'm not responsible of what a web service owner does or what other people do online, as long as I'm kind to others. I thought I can't help it if people are assholes. I can't affect the world being an ugly place. That was my rationale continuing using the site that wasn't that good in general. Nowadays I know how wrong I was. If you see misinformation, misbehaving people, discrimination, toxicity, you can naturally close your eyes and move on - In the digital world block, mute and report, that is. This is acceptable in those places you know something is to be done with the perpetrator. But on #Twitter for example, nothing is to be done with that as the whole culture is upside down. It's like folks are spending time in a Nazi club, in cubicles. Nobody will do anything with the reports. The violence will continue. We've seen continuous examples of discrimination, complete lack of moderation, trampling on minorities, toxic behavior, trolls, antisemitism, extremist activity and the latest: animal abuse. And all this is free and acceptable on Twitter. I can affect this. I can leave the place. And so can you. Leaving is a statement. Staying, using and feeding the algorithm is supporting all that shit. Do you want that? What are you doing there? No community is worth living in the bad neighborhood. Leave Twitter now. :twitterfire: https://deletetwitter.com
