'I would like my pictures to look as if a human being has passed by them, like a snail leaving its trail of the human presence... as a snail leaves its slime.' - Francis Bacon 🐌
This is one of many paintings Bacon made of his friend, the artist Isabel Rawsthorne. He preferred to base his works on photographs of the subject, rather than working from life. He also requested intimate knowledge of the sitter in order to paint what he considered to be an authentic portrait.
Bacon was born #OnThisDay in 1909.
