Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town - 30 & 31 Jan 2026
It took less than 20min to move several Bitcoin wallets from old phone to new phone. Have now been struggling for half a day trying to access a bank account from the new device. 5 phone calls later, I'm still waiting on the line for permission to access my own money. This system is so broken.
We have some numbers. At Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town 2025 we hosted total 359 attendees over the course of two days, an increase of almost 70% over our 2024 total of 212 attendees! STOKED! image
We are so early. People either don't understand it. Or they think it's a scam. There's a lot of work to be done.
I've noticed a major difference between X and Nostr. People here don't seem too bothered when one talks about spending Bitcoin, in fact, here it seems to be encouraged. Whereas on X... Holy shit! People get soooo triggered if one just dare mention that sats may be spent.
If people aren't spending Bitcoin at your Bitcoin conference, is it even a Bitcoin conference? Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town had a total of 356 attendees, including volunteers, staff, organizers, etc. A total of 490 Bitcoin transactions were made, spending 1 601 729 sats. Thus an average of 1.4 transactions per attendee, spending ~3k sats per tx. Enough for 2 coffees. Thanks to @npub1aj9k43cmuqdh23un8f25nzdudpep9vaeumte5v7ran7f697y7dgswjw6h3 for the setup! More details below. 👇👇👇
High level politicians being educated by grassroots projects was a definite highlight of the conference. "In my life I didn't have hope. But as soon as I started saving in Bitcoin, my savings is what gives me hope. If we don't save ourselves, no one is gonna save us. But if you have some Bitcoin in your hardware wallet, that is the thing that's gonna save your life." @LuthandoSABTC🇿🇦 - Community Lead at @BitcoinEkasi "I was very moved by Luthando's talk, I must say ... He opened my eyes to what's going on in Ekasi ... I've learned a lot today. Luthando, thank you for that." Helen Zille - Chairperson of the Federal Council of the Democratic Alliance (DA), former leader of the DA, former Mayor of Cape Town and former Premier of the Western Cape.
Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town 2026 Save the date: January 30th & 31st !!! (Tickets go on sale on the 1st of March)
The only two Mozambican Bitcoiners (that we know of) meet at last!!! 🇲🇿 🇲🇿 🇲🇿 @Daniel Taju & Jorge And in no small part thanks to connections made at Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town. Can't wait to see what happens between now and Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town 2026. image
It's not often that someone is onboarded to Bitcoin and Nostr simultaneously. @Vukosi Chuck came to film the conference and walked away with a brand new Nostr profile and happy to take half his fees in Bitcoin. Give him a follow!
As a last minute add-on to our post-conference road-trip, attendees visited @BitcoinLoxion today. Inspiring fact: Bitcoin Loxion emerged as a result of our inaugural conference, Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town 2024. Project Founder, Thulisa, attended last year January, and left the 2024 conference with a mission. A year later, 30 conference attendees visited that same project, building a circular Bitcoin economy in one of South Africa's largest townships, a stone's throw from Cape Town.
Approximately 80 people arrived in Mossel Bay last night, having made the post conference road-trip to Mossel Bay to come and visit @BitcoinEkasi and @BitcoinWitsand!! We unfortunately won't have good weather, lots of rain and wind coming, but will make the best of it none the less. image
The Winners and Runner Ups of our AdoptingBitcoin Cape Town Padel Tournament this weekend. A total of R11 000 in prize money was paid out in Bitcoin via @Blink Wallet to all the finalists. Thank you for a great tournament and we will see you all next year!
Do normal people stop to think how ludicrous it is that a platform like X can simply suspend a (verified, paid-for) account, because it "broke the rules", without explaining exactly which rule was broken, and how it was broken, and without warning the account that it had just broken a rule, before just suspendig it, causing major disruption to an event that's been planned months in advance? image Sadly, the answer is probably "No."
