Getting into Nostr has led me to explore a lot of open-source code, and I have to admit, it makes me groan a bit when I switch back to our company's codebase. 😂 To be fair, the section I'm responsible for is an internal service, not something customers see, so we can get away with a less polished approach.

Does anyone know why my balance on Alby Hub sometimes changes even when I haven't spent or deposited any funds? My guess is that the balance displayed by Alby doesn't represent the total amount sum in my channels, but rather the usable amount. This usable balance could fluctuate depending on the fee policies of the counterparty node. If the counterparty is a professional Lightning routing node, they might actively change their fees as part of their rebalancing strategy, which in turn affects my available balance. It seems like Bitcoin's DLC (Discreet Log Contract) functionality could act as a privatized form of justice. Are there any actual implemented services for this? I'm imagining a system where a reputable oracle pre-publishes a finite set of choices, and two participants bet on which choice will be the final outcome, something along those lines. Furthermore, if my understanding is correct, it seems this functionality could be implemented without either participant needing to interact with the oracle beforehand, as long as both participants agree on the outcome. Other than the oracle publicly pre-announcing the choices and its public key, the oracle would only need to "do something" and issue a judgment if and when the two participants disagree.

At first, I was a bit puzzled as to why JoinMarket isn't a purely peer-to-peer (P2P) system like Bitcoin or the Lightning Network, but instead has a directory node that it must operate through. I thought that operating in a completely P2P fashion, like Bitcoin, would result in much more stable connections. Then it dawned on me today: I realized that maker nodes have absolutely no incentive to propagate offers from other maker nodes.

A quick question for developers of #coracle and #Flotilla. I've noticed some behavior regarding the link preview feature in DMs. I might be misunderstanding how it works, so I don't want to raise a false alarm. I use nostr DM to transfer sensitive info like NIP-47 NWC (nostr+walletconnect://...) strings between my devices. When I paste one of these strings into the DM input, it appears the client attempts to fetch a link preview. My concern is that this process might be sending the entire string, including the secret key, to an external service to generate that preview. If my observation is accurate, this could be a potential security risk. Has anyone else looked into this? Or could the developers clarify if this is the intended behavior? I'm wondering if there's a Nostr client that has the functionality to show a specific user's notes in chronological order. My hunch is that this is more about the relay's ability to handle such requests efficiently than the client's, so it might not exist, but I figured I'd ask just in case.

Every time I heard about #cashu, I was fascinated by how blind signatures work. To be precise, my wonder wasn't about the ability to sign something without knowing its content. Considering the commutative property of elliptic curve cryptography, it's certainly possible to create a valid signature without knowing the content. My real question was: wouldn't this cause issues during redemption if the content wasn't known? If I deposit 10,000 satoshis and receive a 10,000 satoshi IOU token, how would the mint know how much to pay me later if it didn't know the content? I struggled to find detailed explanations of this specific point in blog posts (ironically, after I understood it, such articles started appearing). It was only after diving into the NUTS standard and the code implementations based on it that I had my "aha!" moment. It turns out there aren't tokens of arbitrary face value at all. Instead, there are separate key pairs for denominations that are powers of two, and your balance is made up of combinations of these. Naturally, signing without knowing the content doesn't cause any problems during redemption, because the content and the amount were never directly related in the first place. If #ecash wallets displayed balances in a similar way to how on-chain wallets with coin control show each individual coin, I would have grasped this concept immediately.
