Oh Debian oh how I enjoy you so, over the last year I have distro hopped so much and I will admit its drove me insane. Switching sometimes as much as 2 to 3 times a week, trust me its not good for the mind at all. Then I found Debian and all my dreams and hopes came true, Debian 13 had just been released and I was so happy I have been on it now for a month on both my laptops. I know its not usual to have two laptops but I use a old laptop connected to a TV to use as a media device and the other as a main device.
Don’t get me wrong I also loved using fedora and many other distros but there is just that little something about Debian and its easy use, like myself i'm getting a little old these days and I enjoy opening up my laptop and having it just work, I had a few problems on other distros where I had to reboot after starting my laptop and quite a bit of issues with RAM on arch which brought my laptop to a halt quite a few times which is a big shame as I loved the speed my device was running.
Fedora will hold a place in my heart still I will not lie, its up to date and works well but at this stage in my Linux journey I need a stable running laptop that I know I can trust. Debian has its own quarks shall we say but I don’t mind these now after my month of full time. Steam can be a mess around a bit until you get it all as you want but truth be told its not a big deal as long as you install it from Debian repos, I can try add a link if I can to share any problems I have found which is not to many.
Debian runs on now only 64bit machines and that’s going to be a problem for some, I’m not sure how many of you are still rocking a 32bit pc these days but Debian 12 is still able to run just fine as its still got support for a few years yet I see online. Flatpaks on Debian is pretty much the way to go to make up for the freeze on older software or back ports if you really want or need something more up to date on your pc. Personally I prefer to use software from the Debian repos as much as I can because I figure its been tested by the devs before being added and they are pretty hot on malicious software before letting it on. I’m a big privacy nut and I feel safer knowing its checked to make sure it works and nothing untoward is lurking within the code.
So many have said to me that Debian can be a safe distro to use as it uses app amour over SElinux which is seen as been a safer option, but if you really wanted to switch over you can if you so wish, that’s the great power of Linux. I tried a week of secureblue which is based on the fedora atomic and that was OK until it wasn’t, I was happy to use it but my word if you had more then a few sites open on the web browser it would kill my laptop to the point it would just freeze up to the point of it being unusable. At the end of the day I still need to be able to use it and knowing that there is a big team of devs happily working on this wonderful distro out of the goodness of there heart really does go along way in my book.
I figure on the private side of things as long as I keep on top of what I use and don’t use I can keep myself fairly safe, I know Debian doest have the strongest of protection but I can work on that myself over time to lock it down. At this moment in time I just need a laptop that works and I can trust it to be a faithful machine as and when I need it to be. I do find myself thinking at times about going back to fedora but then I go to update and do some writing and I remember just why I love this distro so much. My laptop connected to my TV has been running Debian 13 since before the official release way back in august 2025 and its not had a problem keeping on and being a good media provider. I know deep down that I will want to hop over to something else soon enough but I also know that I will be back to Debian soon after and this brings me to not want to try it any more, I just don’t see the point after seeing how rock solid this is to use daily.
Let me end this by saying anyone out there looking for a stable distro then look no further then this wonderful Linux distro, its well worth your time to use and learn from. With so many other distros out there that use this as a base you can see why its a top choice to use. You can honestly make it your own in many ways and have the comfort of knowing that it just works, I know I have said that a lot but I love that about this distro. I’m too old and long in the tooth to be messing around daily just to use it for a little bit of banking or searching the web, i'm sure many of you will have your own ideal distro and I love finding out about them, I mean it would be a boring day to me not seeing something that’s happening within the tech world as its been a passion of mine for a long time now. Please let me know your setup and what you do to make it perfect for you.
