Just like Lightning was sold as one thing, and ended up being another thing completely, so will covenants. Lightning was promised to scale bitcoin and everyone was supposed to easily be able to run a lightning node and transact in btc as a sovereign individual. What actually happened was lightning incentivized custodial btc, and centralized hub and spoke network topography of a few super nodes which process a majority of the transactions, making nodes unconnected to these super nodes, disconnected from the rest of the network, and largely irrelevant. These super nodes will be used as kyc chokepoints.
Expect covenants to be the same. They will promise you the benefits of covenants (better lightning, ark, vaults, etc) and fail to mention that malicious spending conditions can also be imposed, and will be through state or financial system coercion. Things like permanent KYC covenants will be the norm not the exception. Be careful what you wish for.
